What is a phobia?
Phobias are far more common than many people realise with an estimated 11% of the population suffering from some kind of unwanted response to a fear without good reason. These fears can be around absolutely anything from insects or animals to actions or places and can get in the way of us enjoying our everyday lives.
People with phobias often experience intense anxiety or panic when they encounter the source of their fear, often describing their feelings as been ‘panic stricken’, ‘having knots in my stomach’ or ‘just wanting to run’. This is known as the stress response.
Some common phobias include:
- Arachnophobia: Fear of spiders
- Acrophobia: Fear of heights
- Claustrophobia: Fear of confined spaces
- Agoraphobia: Fear of situations where escape might be difficult or help wouldn’t be available
- Ophidiophobia: Fear of snakes
- Aviophobia: Fear of flying
- Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia): Fear of social situations or scrutiny by others
- Trypophobia: Fear of clusters of small holes or irregular patterns
- Astraphobia: Fear of thunder and lightning
- Mysophobia: Fear of germs or dirt
